It shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise that our modern, comfortable, and technology driven lives are also making us quite unhealthy.
We have screens in our faces all day. We never leave our climate controlled homes, cars, and offices. The ease of access to cheap, low quality “food”.
Never before has it been so easy to be alive..
And most of us are sick as a result.
President Theodore Roosevelt used to say that nature was “healing.” Whenever he got overwhelmed by the stress of work, people, and business, he would disappear into the wilderness for a several days or weeks. When he returned, he often proclaimed that he felt restored and healed.
He’s right.
Technology is great, it makes a lot of things more efficient and easy, but it also numbs us. We have lost our innate ability to understand what our bodies are saying. The simplest, healthiest things in life are all free, and accessible to everyone. They will challenge you and likely be pretty difficult.
Get outside and see the sun rise. Get the morning light on your skin and in your eyes every day, even in the winter months, ESPECIALLY in the winter months.
Breathe cold air, take a cold shower or bath.
Maybe go without food for a day.
Every once in a while, train until your legs give out and leave you in a heap of sweat and swear words on the floor.
Living to be “optimal” has left us without the ability to become resilient. We should be able to do all of those things listed above and not freak out like the world is crashing around us.
Our bodies thrive on that kind of acute stress, and makes us drastically healthier as a result.
So, enough of the poorly lit germ factory of a gym pumping terrible music and get outside to train and sweat, and let nature do its thing…heal.
